Temporary Duty

Temporary Duty (TDY) is a short-term assignment that sends a service member to a location other than their permanent duty station for a specific purpose, such as training, conferences, or mission support. TDY status affects how TRICARE benefits are accessed while away from home.

TRICARE considerations during TDY: • TRICARE coverage continues during TDY • Active duty members can receive care at any MTF • Family members retain their existing TRICARE plan coverage at home • Emergency and urgent care are covered at any location • TRICARE Prime enrollees may need to contact their PCM for non-emergency care referrals

Accessing healthcare during TDY: • Use nearby Military Treatment Facilities when available • Network providers are available nationwide • Contact your PCM for referrals if needed • Urgent and emergency care do not require prior authorization • Keep documentation of any care received for records

For family members left at home during a sponsor's TDY: • Continue using regular TRICARE benefits • Access remains unchanged at home location • Contact PCM for routine care needs • Emergency and urgent care available as usual

TDY is distinct from PCS (Permanent Change of Station) in that it is temporary and does not change your home base or TRICARE enrollment location.
