Eye and vision care from a TRICARE-authorized optometrist — how often it's covered depends on who you are and which plan you're on.

Routine eye exams from a TRICARE-authorized optometrist or ophthalmologist are covered, but how often depends on your status. Active duty family members get one routine eye exam per year on any plan. Active duty service members get exams as needed to stay fit for duty. Retirees and others with TRICARE Select, TRICARE Young Adult Select, or TRICARE For Life don’t have routine eye exams covered at all — see vision coverage for the plan-by-plan breakdown.

A referral usually isn’t needed for a network provider; without one, a non-network visit falls under the point-of-service option, which costs more.
