Does TRICARE cover hearing aids?

Direct answer: Only in limited cases. TRICARE covers hearing aids and hearing aid services for active duty service members and their families who meet specific hearing-loss criteria, and for children of retired service members who meet those criteria and are enrolled in TRICARE Prime or the US Family Health Plan. TRICARE does not cover hearing aids for retirees.

Who is covered

  • Active duty service members and their families: TRICARE covers hearing aids and hearing aid services if the hearing loss meets specific hearing criteria. TRICARE’s page does not list those criteria, so ask your audiologist or regional contractor how they apply to you.
  • Children of retired service members: covered only if the child’s hearing loss meets the criteria, the child is enrolled in TRICARE Prime or the US Family Health Plan, and the sponsor is living. TRICARE says this coverage is not available overseas. Who is not covered

TRICARE states that it does not cover hearing aids for retirees.

Options for retirees

  • Retiree-At-Cost Hearing Aid Program (RACHAP): retirees can get hearing aids at a reduced cost at certain military hospitals and clinics if they are eligible for care there. The clinic provides fitting and follow-up, and availability depends on space, equipment, provider availability, and personnel readiness, so contact the facility first.
