Does TRICARE cover tubal ligation?

TRICARE covers tubal ligation as both a surgical benefit and a preventive care service. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) preventive care provisions, female sterilization procedures are covered with no cost-share for most TRICARE beneficiaries when performed by a network provider. This includes tubal ligation performed laparoscopically, as a minilaparotomy, or at the time of cesarean delivery. TRICARE Prime beneficiaries need a referral from their primary care manager, while TRICARE Select beneficiaries can access the procedure through any TRICARE-authorized provider. Active duty service members receive the procedure at no cost at military treatment facilities. The procedure includes the pre-operative evaluation, the surgery itself, anesthesia, and post-operative follow-up care. Hysteroscopic sterilization methods may also be covered when available and medically appropriate for the patient.
