Does TRICARE cover sleep studies?

TRICARE covers sleep studies, also known as polysomnography, when they are medically necessary for diagnosing sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and other conditions affecting sleep quality. Both in-laboratory overnight sleep studies and home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) are covered when ordered by a TRICARE-authorized provider. Under TRICARE Prime, a referral from the primary care manager is typically required to see a sleep specialist, while TRICARE Select allows direct access to network sleep medicine providers. If a sleep disorder is diagnosed, TRICARE also covers treatment including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines and supplies, oral appliances, and follow-up care. Standard copays and cost-shares apply based on the beneficiary's plan and the care setting (outpatient facility vs. provider office). Active duty members receive sleep studies and treatment at no cost.
