Overview

Children normally lose TRICARE coverage at age 21 (or 23 if enrolled full-time at an accredited college and the sponsor provides over half their financial support). TRICARE Young Adult (TYA) lets unmarried adult dependents continue coverage up to age 26 by paying a monthly premium.

Prime vs Select

Two options: TYA Prime (HMO-style with a PCM, only available where Prime is offered) and TYA Select (open access, see any TRICARE-authorized provider). 2025 monthly premiums: TYA Prime $720 and TYA Select $311 (member-only; TYA does not cover the young adult's spouse or children).

2025 premiums

Eligibility: unmarried; under age 26; not eligible for an employer-sponsored plan; not otherwise eligible for TRICARE; and a dependent of an eligible TRICARE sponsor.

Eligibility rules

In addition to the monthly premium, you pay the normal Prime or Select cost-shares for care. Enroll any time after losing regular TRICARE eligibility, during Open Season, or after a QLE — through milConnect or the regional contractor.

When TYA ends

TYA is a bridge benefit. When you turn 26, get married, or gain other coverage, TYA ends; CHCBP can extend coverage for up to 36 more months.
