What is TRICARE Retired Reserve?
Quick Answer
TRICARE Retired Reserve is a premium-based plan for Gray Area retirees (Guard/Reserve members retired but under age 60) who are not yet eligible for regular TRICARE retirement benefits.
Detailed Answer
TRICARE Retired Reserve (TRR) is a premium-based health plan designed for members of the Retired Reserve who are under age 60 and therefore not yet eligible for regular TRICARE retiree coverage. These individuals, often called "Gray Area" retirees, have completed their reserve service obligation and received a notice of eligibility for retired pay at age 60, but have not yet reached that age. TRR provides coverage similar to TRICARE Select, allowing beneficiaries to see any TRICARE-authorized provider without referrals. Monthly premiums for TRR are higher than TRICARE Reserve Select because the member is no longer drilling with their unit. Both the retired member and their eligible family members can enroll. TRR has annual deductibles and cost-shares similar to TRICARE Select. To qualify, the member must be a member of the Retired Reserve under age 60, not be eligible for FEHB, and not be covered by TAMP. Enrollment can be processed through the TRICARE regional contractor.
