What is TRICARE For Life and who qualifies?
TRICARE For Life (TFL) provides comprehensive healthcare coverage as a supplement to Medicare:
Qualification Requirements • Age 65 or older • TRICARE-eligible (retiree or family member) • Enrolled in Medicare Part A AND Part B • Live in the U.S. or U.S. territories
How TFL Works • Medicare pays first • TRICARE pays second (fills most Medicare gaps) • Minimal out-of-pocket costs • No enrollment fees for TFL • Must pay Medicare Part B premiums
Coverage Details • Doctor visits and hospital care • Preventive services • Prescription drugs (through pharmacy program) • Skilled nursing care • Durable medical equipment • Mental health services
Benefits of TFL • Comprehensive coverage with minimal costs • Freedom to see any Medicare provider • No network restrictions • Covers Medicare deductibles and copays • Works overseas (TRICARE pays primary)
Enrollment Process • Automatic enrollment when you turn 65 • Must enroll in Medicare Part B • Update DEERS with Medicare information • Receive TFL card in mail
Important Notes • Must maintain Medicare Part B to keep TFL • If Medicare Part B lapses, TFL ends • Different rules apply if living overseas • Spouses qualify at 65 regardless of sponsor's age
Pharmacy Coverage • TRICARE Pharmacy Program • Medicare Part D not needed • Use military pharmacies, TRICARE network, or home delivery
TFL provides excellent coverage with minimal costs, but maintaining Medicare Part B enrollment is essential.
