Common Questions
Do I have to use military hospitals overseas?
TRICARE Prime enrollees should use the military treatment facility (MTF) when available. TRICARE Select beneficiaries can use civilian providers. If no MTF is accessible, even Prime beneficiaries can use civilian providers with authorization.
Will I have to pay upfront for care overseas?
Often yes, especially with non-network civilian providers. Keep all receipts and file a claim with International SOS for reimbursement. Network providers may file claims directly.
What about prescriptions overseas?
Fill prescriptions at your overseas MTF pharmacy when possible (free). Express Scripts mail order from the US is available for maintenance medications. Local civilian pharmacies may require upfront payment with claim reimbursement.
I'm traveling overseas temporarily — am I still covered?
Yes. TRICARE provides emergency and urgent care coverage worldwide. Non-emergency care may require pre-authorization from International SOS. Contact them before seeking non-emergency care while traveling.
How do I find a provider overseas?
Contact International SOS for provider referrals in your area. They maintain networks of English-speaking providers near military installations. You can also use your MTF if one is available.
