Outpatient
Quick Definition
Healthcare services that do not require an overnight hospital stay.
Full Definition
Outpatient care refers to medical services provided without requiring formal admission to a hospital for an overnight stay. Most healthcare services covered by TRICARE are delivered on an outpatient basis, including doctor visits, diagnostic tests, minor procedures, and preventive care.
Common outpatient services: • Primary care and specialist office visits • Diagnostic tests and laboratory work • Outpatient surgery and procedures • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy • Mental health counseling • Preventive care and screenings • Imaging studies (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans) • Chemotherapy and radiation therapy
TRICARE outpatient costs: • TRICARE Prime: Small copays for civilian care; no cost at MTFs • TRICARE Select: Cost-share after meeting annual deductible • Active duty: No cost for any outpatient care
Outpatient vs. Observation status: • Some hospital stays are classified as outpatient observation even if you stay overnight • Observation status may affect your cost-sharing • Ask about your admission status if you are staying in a hospital
Outpatient care is generally less expensive than inpatient care for both TRICARE and the beneficiary, and does not typically require a Non-Availability Statement.
