Full Definition
The Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) is a category of the Reserve components consisting of individuals who have remaining military service obligations but are not actively drilling with a unit. IRR members have completed their active duty service but still have time remaining on their total military service obligation.
IRR characteristics: • Not assigned to a drilling unit • Not required to attend monthly drills or annual training • May be called to active duty in national emergencies or war • Maintain their military status and rank • Must keep DEERS information updated
TRICARE eligibility for IRR members: • Generally NOT eligible for TRICARE during IRR status • May purchase TRICARE Retired Reserve if eligible • Become TRICARE-eligible if involuntarily called to active duty • May be eligible for Transitional Assistance Management Program (TAMP) after active duty release
Transitioning to IRR: • Typically occurs after completing active duty or Selected Reserve service obligation • Service members may transfer from Selected Reserve to IRR • IRR status continues until total military obligation is fulfilled (usually 8 years total service)
IRR members should explore civilian health insurance options since TRICARE coverage is limited during IRR status. Contact your service branch's personnel center for specific eligibility questions.
