TRICARE Vision Coverage: Eye Exams, Glasses & Costs (2026)

## Is it covered? TRICARE covers eye exams and vision screenings to diagnose or treat eye conditions, though coverage for "routine" eye exams depends on your beneficiary status and plan. While vision services for medical conditions (like cataracts or glaucoma) are widely covered, hardware like glasses or contacts is generally reserved for Active Duty Service Members or specific medical diagnoses.
What TRICARE covers
TRICARE’s vision coverage is split between **comprehensive medical eye care** and **routine eye exams**.
### 1. Routine Eye Exams * **Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs):** Covered annually to maintain readiness. * **Active Duty Family Members (ADFMs):** One routine eye exam per year is covered (no cost for Prime; cost-shared for Select). * **Retirees and their Families:** One routine eye exam is covered every two years (24 months) for those enrolled in Prime. Those in TRICARE Select do not have a routine eye exam benefit unless they are under age 6. * **Children:** One routine eye exam per year for children of active duty members (ages 3–18). For others, coverage usually applies to a one-time "well-child" vision screening between ages 3 and 6.
### 2. Medical Eye Care TRICARE covers exams and treatments for medical conditions of the eye, including: * Cataract surgery (including a standard intraocular lens). * Glaucoma screenings and treatment. * Macular degeneration. * Retinal detachment repair. * Diabetic retinopathy monitoring. * Corneal transplants.
### 3. Glasses and Contacts Generally, TRICARE does **not** cover glasses or contacts for retirees or family members. However, they are covered for: * **Active Duty Service Members:** Issued through military clothing sales or clinics. * **All beneficiaries with specific medical conditions:** Coverage applies if "prosthetic" lenses are needed for conditions like infantile glaucoma, keratoconus, or following cataract surgery (one pair of glasses or contacts per eye after surgery).
### 4. Laser Eye Surgery (LASIK/PRK) TRICARE does not cover elective refractive surgery for most beneficiaries. It is only available to active duty members through specific military treatment facility (MTF) programs like the Corneal Refractive Surgery Program (CRSP).
## Costs Based on 2026 rates, costs depend on your beneficiary "Group" (Group A joined before 2018; Group B joined after) and your plan:
* **TRICARE Prime (ADFMs):** $0 copay for routine eye exams at a network provider. * **TRICARE Prime (Retirees):** Typically a $25–$35 copay (2026 rates) for routine eye exams from a network provider. * **TRICARE Select (ADFMs):** No cost for routine eye exams when using a network provider. * **TRICARE Select (Retirees/others):** Routine eye exams are **not covered**. You must pay 100% out of pocket unless the exam is for a specific medical diagnosis (e.g., flashes, floaters, or pain). * **TRICARE For Life (TFL):** TFL follows Medicare rules. Medicare generally does not cover routine eye exams, and neither will TFL. However, TFL covers medical eye care (cataracts, glaucoma) after Medicare pays its share.
## Pre-authorization & referrals * **Active Duty Service Members:** Always require a referral for any vision care outside of a military clinic. * **TRICARE Prime (Non-ADSM):** You do not need a referral for a routine eye exam from a network optometrist. You **do** need a referral for specialty care (Ophthalmology) for medical eye conditions. * **TRICARE Select:** No referrals are required for routine or medical eye care, provided you see a TRICARE-authorized provider.
## Where to get care * **Military Hospitals/Clinics:** Use the "Find a Doctor" tool on TRICARE.mil to see if your local MTF offers optometry or ophthalmology. * **East Region (Humana Military):** Search the Humana Military provider directory for network optometrists or ophthalmologists. * **West Region (TriWest):** Effective Jan 1, 2025, use the TriWest Healthcare Alliance provider search tool. * **FEDVIP:** If you are a retiree or ADFM seeking more comprehensive vision insurance (coverage for frames and contacts), you may be eligible to enroll in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) during Open Season.
