Physical Therapy

Physical therapy (PT) is a rehabilitative healthcare service that helps restore movement, function, and physical ability after injury, surgery, or illness. TRICARE covers medically necessary physical therapy services when provided by qualified, TRICARE-authorized therapists.

Physical therapy services covered by TRICARE: • Evaluation and assessment of physical function • Therapeutic exercises and activities • Manual therapy techniques • Gait and balance training • Pain management interventions • Post-surgical rehabilitation • Sports injury recovery • Neurological rehabilitation

TRICARE PT coverage details: • Referral may be required for TRICARE Prime enrollees • No referral needed for TRICARE Select • Coverage available at MTFs, network, and non-network providers • Standard cost-sharing applies based on plan and provider type • Prior authorization may be required for extended treatment

Access to physical therapy: • Military Treatment Facilities offer PT at no cost • Network civilian PT clinics offer lower cost-shares • Telehealth PT may be available for some conditions • Home-based PT may be covered when clinically appropriate
