How does TRICARE work during a PCS move?

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move triggers important TRICARE changes, but your coverage continues without interruption during the transition.

Before Your PCS Move

• Obtain copies of medical and dental records for all family members
• Request 90-day prescription supplies through home delivery
• Get referrals for any ongoing specialty care
• Note your current treatment plans and upcoming appointments

During the Move

• TRICARE coverage remains active throughout your move
• Use any emergency room for urgent needs during transit
• Carry your TRICARE ID card and keep it accessible
• Save your regional contractor contact information

After Arriving at Your New Location

• Update your address in DEERS immediately (online via milConnect or at an ID card office)
• Select a new Primary Care Manager (PCM) if enrolled in TRICARE Prime
• Contact your new regional contractor if you changed regions
• Schedule new patient appointments at your new MTF or civilian provider
• Transfer specialty care referrals to new providers

Changing TRICARE Regions

• If your move crosses regional boundaries (East to West or vice versa), your contractor changes
• East Region: Humana Military
• West Region: TriWest Healthcare Alliance
• Enrollment transfers automatically when you update DEERS
• Allow 2-4 weeks for the transition to process

OCONUS Moves (Overseas)

• TRICARE Overseas Program managed by International SOS
• Different enrollment requirements and provider networks
• Active duty automatically enrolled in TRICARE Prime Overseas
• Family command sponsorship may affect coverage timing

Qualifying Life Event

• A PCS move is a qualifying life event
• You can change your TRICARE plan (Prime to Select or vice versa) within 90 days
• This applies even outside of Open Season

Special Considerations for Families

• If family members move separately, update each person's address in DEERS
• Ensure children's immunization records transfer to new schools
• Find new pediatricians and specialists before arriving if possible
